  • Learn about the author’s life
  • Connect books to the author’s life
  • Read many of the author’s books
  • Compare text making connections between texts
  • Search for author’s purpose
  • Connect to all content areas
Preparing an Author Study
  • Choose an author: look for memorable language and themes that connect
  • Research biographical material: much information about authors is available online
  • Collect multiple copies of books: borrow books, ask for donations, visit yard sales
  • Read all of his/her works
  • Record your thoughts and “noticings”: take notes of craft, connections, patterns,
  • Set study goals and timeline: allow at least 3 weeks for a picture book author study
  • Plan a culminating activity: involve the class in planning the activity (video choral reading, invite parents to a performance, send letters/pictures to the author, make a class book, etc.)

Mentor Texts

  • Become familiar with a few books
  • Study the books for craft examples
  • Decide what craft(s) the author used
  • Consider why the author used that craft
  • Name it and try it

Learning from Mentors

  • Start with a read-aloud and connections: children are encouraged to make connections and share in pairs
  • Reread, pausing for interactions: immediately reread the text stopping to let children interact with the story
  • Discuss insights
  • Find striking parts to read chorally
  • Read independently or in pairs

Reading like a Writer

  • Slow down and notice something about the craft of the text
  • Talk about it and think about why the writer might use the craft
  • Give the craft a name
  • Think of other texts in which this is used
  • Envision using the craft and try it
